What does your online reputation say about you?

“You can’t opt out of having an online reputation in today’s world. Instead you can be proactive, get ahead of common issues and own your digital presence. It’s never too early -- and it’s also never too late -- to start participating and taking control of your online reputation.” According to Tripp Donnelly in a recent Forbes article.

For those who opt out and choose not to participate in social media could be as detrimental as having a bad online reputation. The internet brought forth the age of information providing us with instant gratification by connecting us to products, information, and parts of the world we previously could have only imagined. What nobody told you is there’s a side effect that came with it called: The Age of Reputation.

We’ve moved from the age of information to the age of reputation. In fact, according to the Pew Research Center, 91% of people trust what they see and read in search engine results, and the Edelman Trust Barometer reports that 65% of people trust these results more than any other source.

If there is going to be information about your brand, your product, or even you on the internet, make sure you're in the driver seat of owning your online identity.

Be proactive and participate in your online activity. Not only are platforms like LinkedIn and Facebook used as social platforms, but people are making decisions based off the information they find on these platforms, or worse, don’t find. Push out content and push it out often!

Know your audience and the platform you are communicating with. All content is NOT created equal, which is why it’s important to know your audience, target market, and influencers. Engage with your audience and build those relationships. Talk about a wide variety of topics and stay proactive.

The online landscape is frequently changing so stay aware and stay informed on each of your channels so nothing catches you by surprise.
