Definition of Cinematography

  1. the art or science of motion-picture photography

Definition of Videography

  1. the practice or art of recording images with a video camera

Historically, the difference between the two are black and white with Cinematography delivering superior quality via film and Videography on the other hand shot lesser quality on lesser quality equipment. Technology has leveled the playing field with cinema quality equipment being more accessible and affordable. Not to mention the top DSLR cameras are now shooting 4k.

How do you want your product to look and feel?

  • Do you want to feel like you’re watching a movie of your event/important day or do you prefer more of a home movie feel with some static shots, and basic titles?

  • How about a product that is sleekly edited that captures quality sound and fitted to compelling music or do you prefer longer static shots and little sound mixing?

  • How do you want your product to make you feel when you watch it?

  • Most importantly, how do you want your story to be told?

Videography

Is usually a lone wolf or considered a freelancer that typically sets up in a stationary position to capture the entirety of an event or production and utilizes the venue lighting, and depends on little equipment for sound. Typically, videography can be comparable to basic V-logging minus a lot of post production.

Cinematography

Generally speaking, when you see the word “Cinematographer,” you think of Hollywood. But instead, think of cinematography as a planned visual of your day, event, or talking points. This is a film that focuses on cultivating a story, not just aimlessly collecting footage from the day.

Cinematic films are artistic interpretations of footage captured that primarily focuses on highlighting the story behind the images. Cinematographers want to stimulate not only sight but your emotions through certain angles, lighting, transitions, and music that make an individual feel when they watch the piece.

Conclusions on Videography vs Cinematography

Videography provides you with a more affordable option on a small budget and a final product to match it. Not everyone’s needs are the same.  A more planned out cinematic production will encapsulate great sound, imagery, and lighting and edited in a way that makes you feel like you’re there when you watch it.

Finding a quality team that can do both styles of production gives you an advantage as your brand and budget grow or if you’re looking for a videography style shoot on a low budget, you have professionals that you know will do a great job either way.
